DiMeN Flexible Funding - UKRI Policy Internship - Lorna Salvini

The Flexible Funding Award made it possible for me to undertake a 3-month internship as a Parliamentary Policy Researcher within the Senedd/Welsh Parliament in Cardiff, as part of
the prestigious UKRI Policy Internships scheme. As part of the Health and Social Policy Team, I conducted in-depth research on intricate policy matters. I produced accessible
research briefs and articles, translating intricate policy details into lay summaries for
Members of the Senedd. These documents support the Members in developing evidence-
based policy within Parliament and holding the Government to account in these areas.

In particular, I authored and published 5 articles on the Senedd Research website, shedding
light on pressing issues such as the elimination of Hepatitis C in Wales and the state of
antimicrobial resistance. I also collaborated closely with a colleague to deliver a
comprehensive research brief for the Health and Social Care Committee, contributing to
evidence-based decision-making on NHS waiting times.

This enriching experience exposed me to the world of policy, which is an area in which I am considering a career post-PhD. I learnt so much from the excellent team I worked with and I am extremely grateful to them for trusting me with this important work. This opportunity also allowed me to hone my research, communication, and collaboration skills while actively contributing to the betterment of health policy in Wales. I found this experience to be of great value when it came to writing my thesis upon my return to my PhD. The Flexible Funding Award covered my accommodation in Cardiff for the duration of the internship meaning that I was able to fully engage with the role and learn from my talented colleagues. I am proud of the valuable work I accomplished during my time at Senedd Cymru, and I look forward to leveraging these skills to make a meaningful impact in future endeavours.
