  • Can I apply for just one or two projects, or do I have to list three on the application?
You need to apply for three projects. We recommend you keep an open mind when choosing projects and contact the supervisors before submitting your application to discuss their research in more detail and inform your decision. If you are shortlisted to the interview stage, we will ask you to rank projects in order of preference.
  • Do I need to pass the English language requirement at the application stage?
All international applicants are required to have an internationally recognised English language qualification such as IELTS or equivalent. This does not need to be submitted at time of application but we recommend obtaining the qualification as soon as possible, the minimum standard within our partner institutions is an overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.
  • Can I study for a DiMeN PhD part time?
The majority of projects advertised are feasible part-time, however not all of them due to the specific experimental work commitments and you would need to discuss this as an option with the supervisory team before applying. International students must also consider UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) restrictions and contact the host university international office for advice. Part-time study can only be at 50% of full time, so our 4 year programme would be spread over 8 years and stipend funding at 50% per payment. This has implications on Council tax as part-time students are no longer exempt. It is possible to switch to part-time during your PhD according to personal circumstances and this is reviewed locally, on a case-by-case basis.
  • Can I apply if I am not from the United Kingdom?
We accept applications from UK and International applicants, however due to MRC funding conditions, awards to non-UK residents are capped at 30% per intake year (up to 12 places). To be classed as a home student, candidates must meet the following criteria: • Be a UK National (meeting residency requirements), or • Have settled status, or • Have pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements), or • Have indefinite leave to remain or enter If a candidate does not meet the criteria above, they would be classed as an International student.
  • I am an international student, will the tuition fees be covered?
We welcome applications from international candidates. If successful, international students will receive additional funding to cover the international tuition fees for the full 4 years. Please be aware there will be additional costs for your Visa application, UK healthcare cover and international travel that we do not provide as standard. Once an offer is made, these can be discussed with the supervisory team and reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
